Meet the maker
Jess Marlow of Ozark Clay Co., Fayetteville
Wheel-thrown stoneware for everyday tables
The wheel came first, the plan came later. I bought a used Brent on a Tuesday after a twelve-hour shift and set it up in the garage because there was nowhere else for it to go. For a year I threw bad cylinders at night and nursed during the day. The cylinders got better. Eventually the nursing stopped.
Ozark Clay is still that garage, with a kiln now and a door that closes. I make tableware because I think the things we use every day should be made with care by someone who will answer the phone if a handle comes off. Everything is thrown on the wheel, trimmed by hand, and glazed in recipes I mixed myself; the speckle you see is iron in the clay body, not a decal. Read the rest →
