Our story
Made by Theo Banks, Springdale.
The press weighs 1,400 pounds and was free, which tells you most of what you need to know about letterpress. A newspaper in Clarksville was closing and the publisher wanted the 1912 Chandler & Price to go to someone who would run it. Four friends, a trailer and a long afternoon later, it was in the back of a shared studio in Springdale, and it has not moved since.
Paper Hollow prints small editions and binds books by hand. The wood type came from the same newspaper; some of it still has ink from the 1950s in the grain. I set type by hand, print one sheet at a time, and sew bindings with linen thread because glue fails and thread does not.
Editions are small and numbered, and when they are gone I move on. The notebooks are the exception; I will make those as long as people keep filling them.
